Elections Reminder

May 17, 2010

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens of the existing Travel Alert for Ethiopia regarding the national election period from May 23 to July 1, 2010.

As of May 10, 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) requires all diplomats and international organization staff living in Addis to receive a pass from the MFA if they plan to travel outside of Addis Ababa between May 10 and June 30, 2010.  These official travelers must inform the MFA of the names of the travelers, the purpose of travel, the date of travel, and means of transport.  A sample request form has been posted on the Embassy website (see the link at the bottom of this page) and can be obtained through the American Citizens Services section at
consacs@state.gov or, obtained directly from the MFA at +251-11-515-8928.  Forms should be submitted to Room 303 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for approval.

U.S. citizens should review their personal safety and security posture and remain vigilant.  Avoid large gatherings or demonstrations.  Contact your warden if you see increased indicators of crime or violence targeting American citizens or foreign nationals in general.

In the event of any security concerns, the Embassy will alert American citizens in country via the warden system as well as by email, SMS, radio broadcasts on Voice of America, and via a recorded message on the Embassy telephone tree (+011-517-4000 or 124-2424).  Please do not come to the Embassy unless you are specifically directed to do so.

U.S. citizens are strongly urged to review the Department of State’s
Country Specific Information for Ethiopia as well as the Embassy’s recent Warden Messages for Ethiopia.
