Statement on Pardon of Prisoners

The Heads of Mission of the European Union and the United States in Addis Ababa welcome the pardoning and release of a further 32 members and supporters of the opposition, sentenced in relation to the events following the May 2005 elections. It is a significant gesture and we congratulate all who have worked to achieve this outcome and extend particular commendation to the Ethiopian elders and the government of Prime Minister Meles.
The release represents another crucial step forward for political reconciliation in Ethiopia, and will allow the country to look to the future.
The Heads of Mission of the European Union and the U.S. in Addis Ababa remain confident that all sides will work together for the future good of Ethiopia and confirm its strong belief that the only manner to resolve differences is through continuous inclusive and constructive dialogue.
The Heads of Mission of the EU note that the trials of others charged with similar offences have yet to be concluded, and hope for a positive outcome for those who have chosen to defend themselves.
The Heads of Mission of the European Union and the U.S. in Addis Ababa stand ready to continue lending any support deemed necessary to the efforts to promote national reconciliation. We are committed to continue working with the Ethiopian Government, the Opposition and the civil society to promote peaceful development of democracy and democratic institutions within the constitution.
