People-to-People Relations: Foundation of 100 Years of Diplomacy
“This year marks an extraordinary anniversary for the entire American community in Ethiopia, for it was 100 years ago that diplomatic relations between the United States and Ethiopia were first opened. Whether we are talking about business or international relations, a century’s relationship is remarkable. In 1903, most of Africa was consolidated into colonial empires, but the relationship between Ethiopia and America was different. It was founded upon no other intentions than to promote friendship and commerce between our two independent nations. This was a source of great pride to Robert Skinner, the first official American representative here, on the occasion of his first visit with Emperor Menelik II. Upon returning to the United States he had this to say about his time in Ethiopia."
